Sydney Opera House
One of the most unique buildings of the 20th century in the world
The theatre is surrounded by water on three sides and is built on piles
The building is primarily unusual in that, unlike other buildings of this type, built in the classical style, it is a striking example of expressionism, demonstrating a new view of architecture.
185×120 m
Theater dimensions
Common square
22,000 sq. m.
Roof made of sails
The top of the sinks is mechanically covered with white polished and cream matt tiles, resulting in a completely smooth surface - an effect that would hardly be achieved by laying it by hand.
The most remarkable part of the building, which has made the opera house one of the most interesting theatres in the world, is its roof, which is made in the form of shells or sails arranged one after another.
20 years collected funds for the construction of the theater
645 km of electrical cable was laid to provide the building with proper lighting not only inside, but also to create impressive light shows on the edges of the futuristic roof
It is the only such establishment in the world that is open to the general public 363 days a year, with the exception of Christmas and Good Friday. It is open 24 hours a day.
Jorn Utzon, July 1964
The Opera House project is based on the desire to bring people from the world of daily routine into a world of fantasy, where musicians and actors live.
